Repairing Cracks in Woodwind Instruments
Bruce McCall

Cracks in wood instruments are a fact of life; Clarinet family, Oboe family, Wood flute family. Sometimes we know the direct cause of a crack, sometimes we do not. Usually these cracks can be repaired. In this clinic we will explore repairing cracks by examining different scenarios and discussing the best approach to address each situation, including the use of carbon fiber rod and carbon fiber banding.

Exploring the Oboe: Adjustments and Beyond
Bruce McCall

For many repair technicians, working on an oboe is a daunting process, mostly from lack of opportunity and experience. Much like flute and saxophone, the oboe has adjustments that are essential to having the instrument play properly. This clinic session will cover the essential adjustments needed to keep an oboe working correctly and how to test them. As time allows, we will explore non-essential adjustments and other oboe specific problems that can crop up and how to deal with them.

In both clinics, we will strive to allow time for participants to have hands-on experience with the subject matter.

Bruce McCall took apart his first oboe while in the 6th grade. He has been repairing woodwinds since 1976 and beginning in December 2014, joined the expert team of technicians at Meridian Winds, returning to his home town. While very familiar with all levels of woodwinds, much of Bruce's repair experience has been in the service of professionals and college level students from across the country.

Bruce studied oboe and bassoon while earning his Bachelor's degree at Michigan State University. He performed on both instruments while a member of the US Military Academy Band at West Point and as a free-lance musician in New York City and Knoxville, TN.

Bruce has presented oboe adjustment workshops at the annual conference of the IDRS, at universities in KY, MI, SC, TN, TX, VA and at the Brevard Music Center. Bruce holds certification for the installation of Straubinger pads and is the author of "The Essential Guide to Adjusting Your Oboe", which is in use at universities across the country.
