39th Annual NAPBIRT Conference
Normal, IL - April 10-13, 2015

           NAPBIRT  PINEWOOD  DERBY

Back by popular demand after a successful and totally fun 2012 race, NAPBIRT will host its second Pinewood Derby. The Pinewood Derby was created in 1952 by Don Murphy, a Cub Master in Manhattan Beach, CA. Since 1953, the Pinewood Derby continues to be the premier event in Cub Scouting.

This event is planned for Saturday afternoon of the conference after the clinics. We will vary a bit from the traditional rules used by Scout and church groups around the world. Kits are available at all Boy Scout shops, many hobby shops and dozens of places online. We will have two race classes.

Modified Stock Class:
With the modified stock we would use the basic BSA rules with regards to dimensions a weight but not restrict wheel base or amount of work to the wheels as long as they use the wheels from the kit. Wheels must be from the Pinewood Derby car kit

Car specifications:
  • Weight – 5oz
  • Width – 2 3/4 inches
  • Length – 7 inches
  • Vertical track clearance – 3/8 inches above the flat surface
  • Horizontal track clearance – 1 3/4 inches between the wheels
Unlimited Open Class:
Must use the standard starting mechanism of the track and they must remain on the track and not interfere with the other cars.

Car specifications:
  • Weight – no limit
  • Width – 2 3/4 inches
  • Wheel Base - 7 inches (different for 2012)
  • Length – Unlimited but wheelbase of 7" must be maintained
  • Vertical track clearance – 3/8 inches above the flat surface
  • Horizontal track clearance – 1 3/4 inches between the wheels
  • No flame (Scott)

Only dry lubrication is allowed. Cars with oil or grease will be disqualified.
Parts falling off the car will disqualify the car for that pass. Make sure parts are attached well.

A $20.00 entry fee with the proceeds going to the NAPBIRT Education Fund. The winners get bragging rights and possibly some sort of trophy or something.

Race by proxy. Sure! Send your car to the NAPBIRT office by April 6th along with a check for $20.00 to the NAPBIRT Education Fund. We will race it for you and your chance at bragging rights. Include an additional check for return postage if you want us to send your car back to you. NAPBIRT cannot be responsible for accidents.
