Z-60 Dent Machine
Dan Rieck

In this clinic, Dan will demonstrate many different techniques he uses on the Ferrees Z-60 dent machine. The clinic will include a discussion of the fundamental differences between the Ferree's "old style" and "new style" rollers and shoes. Discussion will include proper set-up of the machine, what kind of repairs are appropriate with the machine and many other suggestions for getting the most out of your dent machine. Dan will also speak about general dent removal principles and share ideas for setting up the dent removal area of the repair shop.

Dan Rieck has been repairing band instruments since 1982. From 2002 until July of 2015, he owned and operated Utah Woodwind Repair in Salt Lake City, UT. In August of this year, Dan moved his family and business to Aberdeen, SD, and he is in the process of setting up a new repair facility. His professional background also includes teaching, performing and presentation of repair clinics in the U.S. and Canada. Dan is an active member of NAPBIRT and is very excited about building and outfitting his new music shop in Aberdeen.

Servicing The French Horn
David Smalley

In this two-part clinic session, we will discuss proper repair and maintenance of rotor valves which includes the traditional rotors as well as the modern variations found in some newer trombones and horns. We will cover cleaning, adjustment, proper fit, swedging techniques, rebuilding process, modifications, lever design, alignment, fabrication, detachable bell conversions and more. It's also important to understand proper tool usage. We will discuss some common brass tools as well as some tools specifically designed for the French horn.

David Smalley is Boomer Music Company's brass repair technician. While pursuing a performing career, he became increasingly interested in brass repair and instrument building. When David got an opportunity to learn instrument repair at the Symphony Music Shop in Southeast Massachusetts, he jumped at that chance. After several years, he was given another opportunity to go to work for S. E. Shires Custom Brass. While at Shires, he worked assembling both standard model and custom trumpets, fitting both piston and rotor valves and fabrication of trumpet and trombone components.

David holds a degree in horn performance from Western Illinois University. He then attended the prestigious Masters degree program in Orchestral Performance at the Manhattan School of Music. He continues to maintain an active schedule as a horn player as well.

David lives in Loveland, CO with his wife, Valerie and their 2 wayward pets where they enjoy hiking, biking, skiing and fixing (and occasionally driving) his beloved British sports car.
